Using SMP with a Panel Provider
Often you will want launch your surveys by using a Panel Provider such as Cint or Research Now who are providing the respondents for your survey. Panel Providers are companies that create lists of people who have agreed to be invited to take surveys, usually for some form of small gratuity. There are several things you need to do to your survey to help this process along. They are:
Include the panel providers Exit Links in your survey,
Provide the panel provider with the surveys URL, and,
Provide the panel provider with the Monitor URL so they can monitor the completion rate and adjust their invitation process as required to meet you surveys sample requirements.
The Exit Links
The most important addition to surveys you are sending to a panel provider involves the use of ‘Exit Links’ – in particular, the exit links relevant to that particular panel provider and the survey you have asked them to provide respondents for. The exit links allow the panel provider to track and reward the respondents that complete your survey.
Exit links are defined in your survey in the ‘survey details’ section in the survey editor. Initially they are set to SMP’s default exit links.
Exit Links tell the program where to go after one of three possible survey outcomes:
When the respondent has completed the survey (complete),
When the respondent does not qualify to do the survey (screen out), and,
When the respondent is omitted because the quota is full (quota out),
To change the exit links to your panel providers links first ask your panel provider to send you the links they want you to use for this survey, that is the survey you have asked them to provide respondents for. They will send you three.
Then open the survey in the survey editor and press on the ‘survey detail’ button.
The survey detail pop up will appear. Cut and paste the exit links provided by your panel provider into the appropriate one of the three boxes provided, simultaneously removing the default SMP ones.
Close the survey detail pop up and save your survey. When you deploy your survey the respondent will now be directed to one of the three outcomes as determined by your panel provider.
NOTE: If the exit link sent to you includes the ‘[subsid]’ element (shown below), do not include this element when you cut and paste into your survey.
The Survey Link or URL
After you have placed your survey into the ‘Deployed’ status you can obtain the surveys URL from the drop down on the survey row of the main screen. First click on the drop down arrow circled below. From the drop down list select ‘Deploy url’.
Once you click on this option the Deploy URL options pop up will appear. There are three ways of deploying your survey. Via the Deploy URL, by pasting the iframe code into a webpage or by downloading the survey to an Android powered tablet for use with the SMP CAPI face to face interviewing app.
In this case we are interested in the ‘Deploy URL’ circle below. Highlight the URL and send it to your panel provider. This is the address of the survey that they will send to their panelists with a UID (Unique identifier) attached after the UID= code. This code will be passed to the exit link and returned to the panel provider depending on the outcome of the action taken when the panelist did the survey (Completed it, Screens out, or, Quota out).
Note: Your data set for this survey will also have a variable in it called UID containing the code that was sent to the panelist. If your panel provider did not receive the UID’s for any reason you can always send these to them instead.
The Survey Monitor Display URL
If you wish to you can send a link to your panel provider that will enable them to follow the summary and quota completion rates that you have set up for your survey.
This is the same as the ‘Display Monitor’ you see when you log into the system and choose ‘Monitor progress’ accept for one important change. It does not include the ‘Quotas Config’ button. In other words the person you send the Monitor URL to cannot alter the sample size of quotas that have been set. Only you can do that when you log into the system and click on ‘Display monitor’ on the main screen.
To obtain the Monitor URL:
After you have placed your survey into the ‘Deployed’ status you can obtain the surveys ‘Monitor URL’ from the drop down on the survey row of the main screen. First click on the drop down arrow circled below. From the drop down list select ‘Monitor url’.
Copy and send the URL to your panel provider project manager. When they click on it they will see the following display monitor minus the Quotas Config button.
